I always remember the student fidgeting in the classroom on the first day of the class. Worries and hesitations were painted on their faces because of the obvious reason that they have less knowledge of vocabularies. They were very anxious to speak up their mind because, they, unconsciously, are groping for the right word in their sentences. But, most of the time, they ended up speechless because they can’t find the right one.
In my vocabulary class, students were taught on how to categorize and to form the words in their proper usage. Students were also taught how to understand the meaning of words and phrases literally or metaphorically. They were exposed on how to connect words from one to another and use them in the right sentence structure. In the end, students learn vocabulary by understanding and familiarizing not by memorizing.
