To teach General ESL

Teaching is to bring understanding to someone, especially through an experience. Thus, teaching General ESL is imparting knowledge and skills to students who want to acquire and practice the essential skills in English, such as, Speaking, Listening, Reading & Vocabulary, Writing and Grammar. General ESL serves as the training ground to higher level skills, because in this course, these five areas are given individual emphasis.
To teach General ESL is not an easy job for me. As once said by George Evans that every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way. Therefore, as a teacher, I have to use different strategies which are suitable for my students’ needs. I need to know their strengths and weaknesses, then there I get the way on how to teach them and how they improve their English skills. In doing so, I have to realize total English immersion. I make sure and I encourage them to speak English all the times. Though they speak English, another concern is their pronunciation, grammar and word choices. As their teacher, I see to it that they use the language meaningfully through checking these three areas of concern. Another thing is knowing their culture. With this, I have to consider the way I ask questions and the approaches I use because it might be offensive to them. So, teaching foreign students requires teacher to be flexible, skilled enough and most of all culture –oriented.
